SUMMARY:Katie Page\, MD\, MS: Transforming Diabetes Research Across the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Page’s research program has two major components: (i) neuroendocrine regulation of appetite\, feeding behavior\, and glucose homeostasis; (ii) intergenerational transmission of obesity and diabetes. Her research has been recognized by Outstanding Investigator Awards from the Endocrine Society (2012)\, Western American Federation for Medical Research (2012)\, the American Diabetes Association Pathway Accelerator Award (2013)\, the American Heart Association (2014)\, and the Western Society for Clinical Investigation (2019). She has received external grant funding from the National Institutes of Health\, the American Diabetes Association\, the American Heart Association\, and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. \nHer long-term vision is to identify mechanisms and markers of disease in people at high risk for diabetes\, whether related to in utero exposure to maternal metabolic disorders or other postnatal environmental influences\, and to develop at test interventions to prevent diabetes and its related complications. \n  \nKatie Page\, MD\, MS\nAssociate Professor of Medicine\nVice Chief\, Division of Endocrinology\nDirector\, Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute\nKeck School of Medicine of USC \n  \nEvent Flyer:

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Millman\, PhD: A New Era of Diabetes Treatment: The Use of Human Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Islets
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeffrey Millman is  an Associate Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at Washington University School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. from MIT and completed his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas Melton at Harvard University. His current research is focused on synergizing both biomedical engineering and cell biology approaches to use stem cells for the study and treatment of diabetes. He is developing new approaches for the differentiation of insulin-producing islets from stem cells and improving their utility for cell replacement therapy and in vitro disease models. His innovations have been licensed to several biotechnology and startup companies in the diabetes space and resulted in one ongoing clinical trial. His laboratory is supported by the NIH NIDDK and JDRF\, and his scholarship has been recently recognized by awards from the JDRF\, American Institute of Chemical Engineering\, and the Biomedical Engineering Society. \nJeffrey Millman\, PhD \nAssociate Professor of Medicine\nDivision of Endocrinology\, Metabolism\, and Lipid Research\nAffiliate Faculty\, Department of Biomedical Engineering\nWashington University School of Medicine \nEvent flyer:

SUMMARY:Nicolas Musi\, MD: Role of the Gut Microbiome and Endotoxemia on Insulin Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Musi has dedicated his research career to studying mechanisms and pathways that regulate cellular metabolic processes in health\, disease (obesity\, type 2 diabetes) and during the aging process. During his early work\, he conducted groundbreaking research that established the role that AMPK plays on muscle biology and mechanism of metformin’s action. As his interests and areas of work have expanded\, his lab has been investigating mechanisms underlying the metabolic abnormalities seen in various insulin-resistant states\, including obesity\, diabetes and aging. Many of Dr. Musi’s studies on this topic center on investigating inflammatory pathways linked to metabolic disease and the biology of aging with focus on NFkB and TLR4. \nNicolas Musi\, M.D.\nProfessor of Medicine\nDivisions of Diabetes and Geriatrics\nDirector\, Barshop Institute\nDirector\, San Antonio Geriatric Research\,\nEducation and Clinical Center (GRECC)\nUniversity of Texas Health Science Center
